What do Farrah Fawcett, Burt Reynolds, Lindsay Wagner, ArnoldSchwarzenegger, Suzanne Somers and John Ritter all have in common?
Before they were famous, they all appeared on the TV show The Dating Game, a popular program that allowed bachelors and bachelorettes to pose questions to three people vying to be their dates — prospective partners the bachelors and bachelorettes could not see as they quizzed them.
The show was considered somewhat racy back in the day. It first aired in 1965 and, through the years, has had revised versions and hosts. I loved watching some of these vulnerable participants stumble on their answers, nervously hoping to be chosen as the winner of the date.
I watched a couple of these on YouTube recently and laughed as Somers asked the guys: “If you were a tree, what kind would you be for me?” One bachelor quipped, “An oak tree, sturdy and stable.” Another bachelor replied, “A fir tree” — which led Somers to wonder if he would be the type to give her a fur coat or if he just had a lot of body hair.
The notion of game shows or reality shows pairing singles is gaining in popularity. With programs like the The Bachelor, Love Connection and First Dates,  I realized it might be time to reinvent The Dating Game live in Kamloops.
I reached out to Teri Willey at the Blue Grotto and we are setting the plan in motion.
We have the venue, we will have amazing date prize packages and all we need now are the participants. We are hoping to have two rounds, with five bachelorettes and one bachelor each round. Round 1 will be for a more mature age group, while Round 2 will be for the younger set.
This will be a win-win for everyone — even for those that aren’t chosen. It will be entertaining to watch, two couples will win great prizes and there will be an opportunity to connect with awesome singles.
I plan to contact some of the single ladies I know, but if you are single, 30-plus and interested in learning more about taking part in one of the rounds, contact me and I will give you the information, Of course, if you are a 30-plus single guy, I really urge you to email me to see if we can get you in one of the rounds as the featured bachelor.
This will be a night of entertainment for couples, singles and a great girls’ or guys’ night out. We are organizing some live music to finish off the night. We have not yet picked a date as we first need participants. I know it seems daunting to put yourself out there, but I promise you will love it. This isn’t just for outgoing extroverted singles, either. Many shy people appeared on The Dating Game and were chosen several times over their boisterous counterparts, so it would be fun to have a mix of personality types on the panel.
Imagine how fun it would be to answer questions like “What kind of animal best describes your personality?” or “What song best describes your love life and why?” or “What car could be named after you and why?”
If you are single and happy and would like to share that happiness with someone, contact me by email attara@kamloopsthisweek.com. Maybe if all goes well with The Dating Game, we can have those same contestants appear in The Newlywed Game.
